October Sky Response
The movie, "October Sky," directed by Joe Johnston, follows the life of a young boy named Homer; the movie is based on a true story. It follows Homer through his high school year during which he is inspired to take up the art of rocketry. He doesn't have a supportive role model to guide him on his path to success. Homer's father does not want him to pursue a career involving rocketry; instead his father wants him to pursue a career in the coal mining industry, much like himself. Even with all the negativity coming from his father, he still manages to become successful. He shows a number of admirable qualities throughout the movie. He is a fighter because he doesn't give up on trying for football in the beginning of the movie. He also won't let his father put him down about his ambitions. Every little scene we see his quality as a fighter shine through. For example, when the welder he needs assistance from denies him of his help, he ends up convincing him anyways. Homer is also an independent character. He doesn't want to follow in everyone else's footsteps and become a miner. He believes in himself and that is what made him into such a huge success. I find that in minor situations with his friends, he tends to stand out and have his own opinion. For example, when one of his friends says that coal mining is the only career any of them can pursue, Homer interjects and says that you can be whoever you want to be. Homer is an intelligent person. He learns about the science behind rocketry with the help of just a few people. In a scene in the movie, we see him comprehend advanced math all on his own; proving how smart he really is. Homer's character is well-rounded and possesses many honorable qualities. I think that Homer was a success because he believed in himself and had the right motivation to pursue his goals.
